SMTP4 500 μL Air-Displacement Pipetting Pump
FOREACH SMTP4-500 μL is an air displacement pipetting pump with a nominal capacity of 500 μL, designed for integration into automated instruments. Disposable tips support sample transfer, aliquoting, diluent addition and reagent dispensing in sample preparation equipment, automated pipetting units and laboratory liquid handling workstations.
SMTP4-500 μL is a capacity option for sample transfer and liquid addition tasks requiring larger individual volumes. It works with the instrument’s positioning axes to transfer liquids between source and destination containers and supports automatic tip ejection. Aspiration and dispensing cycles, motion sequences and tip changes for aliquoting must be defined according to actual volumes and workflow requirements.
The equipment integrator supplies drive and process control; liquid level and abnormal aspiration monitoring require a project-specific detection solution. Match aspiration and dispensing parameters and cycle times to routine working volumes, liquid properties, containers and tips. The 0.25 μL/step specification is drive resolution; pipetting accuracy and repeatability must be verified under actual operating conditions.
Typical Applications:
Sample aliquoting, Diluent addition, Reagent transfer

Typical applications
SMTP4-500 μL is intended for equipment modules that need larger single-transfer volumes and fewer repeated aspiration cycles. Nominal capacity helps identify candidate configurations; actual pipetting performance also depends on the liquid, tip and equipment motion.
Sample preparation: sample aliquoting and transfer
Dividing a sample into several portions for subsequent processing is aliquoting; moving liquid into a vessel for the next process step is sample transfer. The instrument must manage each portion volume, the remaining source volume and the tip strategy when changing samples.
SMTP4-500 μL can be used in pipetting modules covering larger single-transfer volumes. When choosing separate aspiration and dispense cycles or one aspiration followed by multiple dispenses, account for total aspirated volume, method allowance and usable tip capacity. Check actual first and last portion volumes; liquid-level and insufficient-liquid assessment require the instrument’s detection solution.
Dilution workflows: diluent and buffer dispensing
Adding diluent to a vessel already containing sample is diluent dispensing; adding buffer according to a recipe is buffer dispensing. The sample and diluent together form the final volume, so calculate the dilution factor from their actual volumes. Mixing is a separate subsequent action.
The larger nominal capacity of SMTP4-500 μL helps plan the number of transfers for the target diluent volume. Include aspiration depth, waiting time, dispensing speed and mixing steps in the method. After changing the recipe, verify final concentration and repeatability using actual sample and diluent volumes.
OEM pipetting unit: tip handling and positioning-axis integration
In an automated workstation, the pipetting pump, positioning axes, tip rack and consumable positioning form a pipetting unit. Beyond aspiration and dispensing, the instrument must complete the sequence of tip loading, movement to the destination, dispensing and tip ejection.
SMTP4 supports automatic tip ejection, but tip-loading stroke, force and ejection position must match the instrument mechanics. After changing tip specifications, recheck airtightness and loading and ejection motions. Similar tip shapes do not establish compatibility.
Application selection information
Provide the volume per transfer or aliquot, the number of dispenses per cycle, liquids and tips, and the method for managing the remaining volume in the source vessel. Also specify the drive, positioning axes and target cycle time.

Frequently Asked Questions
500 μL is the nominal capacity; 0.25 μL/step is drive resolution, not a minimum reliable transfer volume or an accuracy specification. Working-volume selection must also account for usable tip capacity, method allowances and actual delivery performance with the intended liquid.
