Spectroscopy and elemental analysis: multiple-source selection

Application guide

Multiple-source selection is a spectroscopy and elemental-analysis task. This page explains component roles, operating sequence, actual operating conditions and restart requirements. Identify the architecture before comparing configurations.

Applicable architecture

This guide covers liquid-sample elemental analysis and auxiliary fluidics. Solid, gas and other spectroscopic architectures require separate assessment of their introduction devices. Flow or capacity alone does not qualify these candidates as replacements for the original sample-introduction system.

01Where multiple-source selection fits in the instrument

Calculate shared volume and transit delay when switching samples, standards, blanks and wash liquids. Validate displacement volume, carryover and recovery time for the matrix and analyte rather than selecting by valve port count alone.

Create a port map before switching samples, standards, blanks and wash liquids. Validate blanks and stabilization time with the matrix combinations most difficult to clear, then determine displacement volume.

02Product responsibilities in this operation

Valves control the current source or destination; the associated drive performs metering or transfer. Port connections, actual positioning and shared-segment renewal must match the operation.

For this spectroscopy and elemental-analysis task, define all ports, valve states, pressures in each state, shared volume and displacement volume.

03Organize the sequence by actual architecture

  1. Map port connections for samples, standards, blanks and wash liquids. Identify shared tubing, wash destinations and introduction states currently permitted by the instrument.
  2. Select the current source at pressures permitted by the valve and associated drive. Check ports and actual flow direction to prevent residue from the previous source entering a valid measurement.
  3. Plan flushing from shared volume and confirm arrival of the new composition at the receiving or introduction interface. Record valve-positioning time separately from completion of liquid renewal.
  4. Using actual acid/salt matrices and relevant analytes, check blanks, residue and stabilization time after challenging source switches. Release the measurement window only after recovery is confirmed.

04Define operating conditions for this task

06Validate operation results at the receiver

Check unintended connections, leakage, backflow and post-switching residue in each state; measure flushing volume and arrival delay through the complete path.

Check concentration ratios, mixing, blank recovery and method results. Evaluate preparation and sample supply separately.

07Locate abnormalities and restore the next operation

Misalignment, shared-segment residue or abnormal switching pressure may affect the next task.

Stop the pump, check port states and flush again after recovery.

A sample-preparation pump is not automatically suitable for nebulizer supply. Confirm the introduction system for the specific instrument.

What Is a Programmable Syringe Pump? Operation, Fluid Routing and Automation

A programmable syringe pump uses a motor to control syringe plunger displacement and speed, executing aspiration, dispensing, pauses and repeated actions through commands. With a routing valve, it can connect reagent reservoirs, reaction vessels and wash paths into an automated dispensing process. Instrument development therefore needs to define volume, fluid connections and timing together.
