Syringe pumps in hematology analyzers

Application guide

Focusing on diluent and sample transfer in hematology analyzers, this page explains syringe-pump location, coordination and configuration conditions, linking to related operating and validation tasks.

Applicable architecture

Hematology analyzers may use different detection principles and channel configurations. Diluent, lysing reagent and sheath-fluid locations depend on the specific method; sheath-flow conditions do not apply to every counting channel.[3]

01What do these products do in this instrument?

Syringe pumps: diluent and sample transfer

Organize sample transfer or diluent delivery in syringe-driven branches, using valves and reaction positions to prepare the required ratio. If the method uses lysing reagent, check its actual dose separately.

HLD and HMD organize aspiration/dispensing paths with rotary and solenoid valves respectively. Capacity budgets include useful volume, holding stages and replenishment points; valve states and pump actions together create each delivery.

02Organize syringe metering around aspiration, holding and dispensing

Syringe drives use controlled displacement for aspiration, holding and dispensing. With direct contact, source liquid enters the metering chamber; with system-liquid drive, sample can remain at the probe tip or a designated tube segment. Define wetted coverage before capacity, cleaning and replenishment. For repeated dispensing, track current inventory, delivered volume and next replenishment time.

03Map valve connections to every action

Check port connections, opening/closing sequence and power-off state separately for rotary- and solenoid-valve configurations. Changing source does not automatically remove old liquid from the chamber or shared tubing. Plan flushing for formulation and residue requirements, then evaluate the first dose after switching and dose-to-dose variation.

06Explore specific operating and validation tasks

Diluent and reaction-reagent metering

Equal commanded volumes in two branches do not establish the correct final ratio. Check delivery errors, tubing residue and mixing together within the assay-defined dilution step.

07Confirm product roles in actual operation

OperationMeasurements and observationsPriority checks
Diluent and reaction-reagent meteringMeasure each branch's delivery, received ratio and mixing uniformity separately, then check assay responseSmall-volume errors, shared residual liquid or inadequate mixing may alter the actual ratio

Check sampling, ratios and channel recovery with actual whole-blood conditions, and validate supply stability during continuous testing.

08For repeated dispensing from one chamber, is checking total volume enough?

Measure each received dose, especially the first and last. Even when total volume is near target, individual errors may differ. Relate replenishment, valve switching and receiving actions to each result.

Metered dilution and sheath-fluid flow are different roles; sheath-fluid requirements depend on the detection architecture.

What Is a Programmable Syringe Pump? Operation, Fluid Routing and Automation

A programmable syringe pump uses a motor to control syringe plunger displacement and speed, executing aspiration, dispensing, pauses and repeated actions through commands. With a routing valve, it can connect reagent reservoirs, reaction vessels and wash paths into an automated dispensing process. Instrument development therefore needs to define volume, fluid connections and timing together.
